Thomas M. Smith


Thomas M. Smith, 84, of Springfield, passed away on Monday, September 15, 2008 in the Springfield Regional Medical Center - East High Street Campus. He was born on September 27, 1923 in Columbus, Ohio the son of Thomas and Marian Smith.

He graduated from Columbus South High School, president of his class. Tom served our country in the United States Army during World War II. He was a Paratrooper in the 101st Airborne and fought in the "Battle of the Bulge." He has a long and distinguished career as an Insurance Claims Adjuster, starting in 1948 with what is now Nationwide Insurance. He joined Ohio Claims Service in 1956, becoming a partner and eventually sole owner of the Springfield office retiring August 1995. Tom was a fifty-five year member of the Free and Accepted Masons Antioch Shrine Temple, Dayton, and the Grand Lodge and was past member of the Salvation Army. He was also a longtime member of the Mitchell Hills Club and Northridge United Methodist Church.

Tom is survived by his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Helen Smith of Springfield, daughter, Lynne Thomas of Milan, Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Kathi Smith of Altamonte Springs, Florida; three grandchildren: Allison Smith of Pennsylvania, Jacob and Joseph Thomas of Milan, two step grandchildren, Jaret Adams and Brice (Brandi) Adams and their families, all of Urbana, four step great grandchildren, sister, Jane Carroll of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Barbara Ann Smith, sister, Marian Richardson, and brother, Carl F. Smith.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2008 from 4-7 p.m. in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME where services will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Ken Woode officiating. Burial will follow at the Glen Rest Cemetery, Reynoldsburg, Ohio.
