Ruth Custer Swan


Ruth Custer Swan, 95, of South Charleston, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 1, 2008.

She was born on March 27, 1913, in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of Hartley and Stella Kirkpatrick. She was a 1931 graduate of Cardington Ohio High School and attended Otterbein College for 1 year.

She married Corless Custer in 1933 and they were married for 43 years before he passed away in 1975. Ruth was a homemaker and drove a school bus for 25 years for Selma and Southeastern school district. She was the first woman school bus driver in Ohio!

She was a member of South Charleston United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Ruth also belonged to the Rebecca Circle for many years and was very well known in the community for her ability to cook, especially pies which she made for everyone.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Corless; second husband, whom she married in 1979, Glendon Swan Sr.(1998); and sister, Doris Beckley.

She is survived by daughter, Mrs. Becky (James) Brumfield of South Charleston; granddaughter, Diana L. Carper, DVM, RN of Stillwater, Oklahoma; step-children, Barbara Gates, Glendon Swan Jr., William Swan, and Carolyn Hill; several step-grandchildren; and nieces, Kay (William) Marinich of Tully, New York and Sue (Donald) Griggs of Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Friends may call from 2-5 PM on Sunday, October 5, 2008 at INGLING WILLIAMS FUNERAL HOME- SOUTH CHARLESTON. A celebration of Ruth's life will be held on Monday, October 6, 2008 at the South Charleston United Methodist Church at 1PM. Interment to follow at Ferncliff Cemetery
