Michael B. Shockey

Michael B. Shockey, 59, of Springfield, left his earthly home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at 12:30 p.m.

After his diagnosis of multiple myeloma eight years ago, many specialists agreed that Mike would only live 2-3 years at most with or without treatment. Mike always believed in his heart that God was the only one that knew the actual day of Mike's homecoming.

Mike was born on March 19, 1949 to Bruce and Elaine Shockey in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. They eventually made their home in Hagerstown, Maryland, where Mike graduated from high school and then joined the United States Air Force. He served his country for four years in active duty status, and then served in the Air Force Reserves retiring at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant.

Upon leaving active duty, Mike applied for a position as an Air Reserve Technician which opened the door for many opportunities for his civil service career. He retired as a program manager from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 2005 with over of 30 years of service.

After three months into retirement, he had an opportunity to return to the workforce as a support contractor for the Alion Science Technology Corp where he was currently employed.

Mike loved his family very much. He leaves behind his loving wife and "better two-thirds" as he often referred to her Bobbie Heaston. Mike was proud of ALL of his kids, and told them so each time he spoke with them. He has two sons, Michael (April) Shockey Jr. of Tallahassee, Florida, MSgt Jeff (Priscilla) Shockey of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, two "daughters", Jenny Sumpter of Oxford, Ohio and Billie Sumpter of Springfield, five wonderful grandchildren: Zach Moore of Tallahassee, Florida, Myles Shockey of Fairborn, Justin and Madde Shockey of Anchorage, Alaska, and his motorcycle riding partner and the shifting fool kid, "Miss Malorie" Sumpter of Oxford, Ohio.

Other survivors include two sisters Becky (Terry) Myers and Diane (Jack) Brining, his nieces Dawn, Denise, and Emily and nephew Cole, a very special stepdad Boyd Wiles, his father and mother-in-law, Fred and Jean Heaston whom he loved like his very own parents, brother-in-law Fred Heaston Jr., sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Tom and Judy Johnson, and their daughter Miss Katie, and Sam and Barb Heaston and their sons, Sammy, Ricky, and Alex.

The family would like to thank Mike's many special friends that visited weekly by phone or dropped by the house (you already know who you are). The family thanks you for the time you set aside to check-in on Mike. You made each visit a special time for him. Mike's relationship with the folks at Dayton Oncology went above and beyond the patient /doctor relationship. After eight years, they became his friends and second family. The family wants to especially thank his oncologist and friend, Dr. Mark Collins and his staff (Anita, Lois, Amy, and Dee), for never giving up on him during his many years of treatment.

At Mike's request there will not be a funeral, but there will be a memorial service celebrating his life. The celebration will take place at Victory Baptist Church, 2691 W. Possum Rd. in Springfield, Ohio on November 1, 2008 at 1:30 pm with Pastors Chris Farmer and Dan Stinger officiating. If you can not attend, please know that Mike looks forward to seeing you again "When We All Get to Heaven."

Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 383 Main Avenue, 5th floor, Norwalk, CT 06851 or www.multiplemyeloma.org.

The family is being served by the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY.
