Helen L. Smith


Helen L. "Penny" (Pencil) Smith, 85 of Springfield and Holiday, Florida passed away Friday, April 3, 2009 in the Springfield Regional Medical Center, High St. Campus. She was born in Clark County on August 31, 1923 the daughter of William (Bill) and Fannie (Free) Pencil.

She graduated from North Hampton High School in 1941. She was the first woman fork lift driver at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and played fast pitch soft ball for Fink and Hinney Meats in her youth. She was an avid bowler for many years and was still bowling at 85. She was retired from International Truck and Engine. But her love for young people led her to be a 4-H leader and was the leader of the Black and White Dairy Boosters 4-H Club for over 50 years. She had received numerous awards from Clark County 4-H and from the State of Ohio.

She is survived by two children and their spouses Mark and Denise (Petry) Smith and Vicki and Paul Williams, four grandchildren Ryan Smith, Amy (Regan) Eggleston, Paula Williams and James Williams, two great-granddaughters Joey Holtsberry and Aubre Eggleston, two sisters JoAnne Baker and Glenna Stickley, two sisters-in-law Martha Pencil and Mary Vivian Smith, many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Harold J. Smith, parents, grandson Rusty Smith, brother Edwin "Sonny" Pencil and his twin sister Edna Fern Pencil, two brothers-in-law Harold Baker and Jr. Stickley.

Family to receive friends Monday, April 6, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the JACKSON LYTLE WILLIAMS FUNERAL HOME 2425 N. Limestone St.; where funeral service will be held 1:00pm Tuesday. Burial will follow in the Myers Cemetery
