Frederick Earl Schneider

Frederick Earl Schneider, 66, of Springfield, passed away on July 10, 2007 in Community Hospital after several years of illness.

Fred was born May 16, 1941 in Springfield, OH the only child of Robert A. and Margaret C. (Crawford) Schneider. He was a 1959 graduate of Catholic Central High School and later from the Springfield Business College. Fred entered the U.S. Air Force in February 1964 and was stationed at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, KS. In 1967 he was sent to Madrid, Spain and remained there until his Honorable discharge in July 1969. Fred returned to Springfield and worked at Cooper Energy Services as an Inventory Analyst retiring in 1989 due to complications of his illness.

He had a wonderfully hobby of Model Railroading. His greatest pride and joy was building and operating his HO model layout in the basement of his home. He grew up loving the Pennsylvania Railroad so it was only fitting that his home layout was modeled after that railroad. He centered his layout after the small town of Cherry Valley, PA and later named his railroad "The Cherry Valley and Southern Railroad". Fred was a life member of the National Railroad Society and was very active in local Division Three out of Dayton. He held many elected offices and spent many hours volunteering his services at railroad events to get others to know and enjoy his hobby. Fred also loved the big trains and being outside, so he became a life member of the Carillon Park Rail and Steam Society in Dayton and spent many hours supporting their efforts until his illness prevented him from doing more.

While Fred was stationed at the Air Base in Wichita, KS he met his wife, Phyllis. They were married here in Springfield on August 23, 1969 at St. Bernard Catholic Church.

Fred is survived by his wife, Phyllis as well as his aunt, Audrey Shaw of Yellow Springs, OH; cousins Ron Shaw and family of Abilene, TX; special cousins, Nancy Zerkle, Philip Zerkle, George Simons, John Schneider and Ralph Schnieder of Springfield; other cousins in Ohio; a very special friend and care giver, John Clark who spent many hours assisting the family with Fred during his years of illness.

Fred was blessed with many friends in his lifetime, many who shared his love for model railroading and helped support him throughout his time of need. Although there are too many to mention, he remained close to Dick and Beverly Sine, Chris and Tina Fisher, Sonny Grewell and John and Pam Hughel. He leaves a host of model railroad buddies who he will miss tremendously. Fred is also survived by his mother in law, Betty Warren and his wife's family in Kansas and Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal grandparents, Earl and Surna (Ficus) Crawford, paternal grandparents, George and Amelia (Fisher) Schneider and special cousin, Helen Hilbert.

He had some very special doctors who took care of him during the last few years of his life. He had some difficult illnesses to tackle but always seemed to come out ahead until he just could not deal with the pain and suffering any longer. Fred was a patient at the Community Physicians Dialysis Center and the nurses, staff and office workers became his family. He received the very best of care from all of them. A special thank you to his doctors, Steven Morgenstern, Pius Kurian, George Varghese, S. Varghese and Joseph Demeter and many others who helped during his illness.

Friends may call in the Conroy Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in St. Bernard Church with burial in St. Bernard Cemetery. The family request memorial donations be made to the Moorefield Township Fire Department for the services he used many times, the Community Physicians Dialysis Center or St. Bernard Church.
