Robert P. Rohrer


Robert P. Rohrer, 91, of Springfield, died Monday morning, May 14, 2007 in Oakwood Village Glaesner Care Center following several months of failing health. He was born in Shelby, Ohio on February 13, 1916 the son of the late J. Howard and Bess (Powell) Rohrer.

Bob attended Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. In 1982, he retired as executive vice president of Ohio Thermometer Company. While at Ohio Thermometer, he was responsible for the development of the jumbo dial thermometer. Following his retirement, Bob took great pride in his "second career", freelance writing. He was well published and concentrated on humorous articles. During the Korean War, Bob wrote an informal newsletter, "The Springfielder" to the troops serving overseas. His creative side was also reflected in being a cartoonist, drawing many caricatures of friends and family members on greeting cards. He was an avid golfer, Cincinnati Reds and Ohio State Buckeye fan.

He was a member of High St. United Methodist Church, Springfield Rotary Club where he served as president and was a Paul Harris fellow, Springfield Country Club, past-president of the University Club, and past president of the Van Dyke Club. Bob was a proud member of the Dan Beard Council Boy Scouts of America and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He donated countless hours to the Springfield City Schools having served on an advisory committee to the school board.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Bette J. (Anderson) Rohrer; son and daughter-in-law, James H. and Nancy Rohrer of Evergreen, Colorado; daughter, Susan Rohrer Mahan and her husband, Mark of Cincinnati; four grandchildren, Scott (Melissa) Rohrer, Andy (Marisa) Rohrer, Dan (Gretchen) Mahan, and Luke Mahan; four great grandchildren, Kenlie Rohrer, Robert P. Rohrer II, Bradley Rohrer, and William Noah Mahan; and many dear friends.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with Pastor E. Cary Simonton officiating. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.
