Mahlon M. Newkirk


Mahlon M. Newkirk, 83 of Springfield passed away Wednesday May 14, 2008.

He grew up in Lake Andes, SD, the second son of R.W. and Florence Newkirk.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; three brothers and his parents. Survivors include; his daughters and their husbands, Lisa and Frank Blazer and Judy and Mark Irvine; grandchildren, Stephen and Jessica (Blazer) and James and Jeffery (Irvine).

Col. Newkirk served on active duty for 31 years in the United States Air Force. His decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 4/OLC, Legion of Merit, Commendation Medal and American, Pacific, and Korean Theater Medals with battle stars. He retired from the Air Force in 1974, and then served as an assistant professor of Business Administration at Wittenberg University until retiring in 1984. He kept busy as a volunteer manager of the money management program at Elderly United and was a math tutor for Springfield City Schools' adult education, until ill health in 2002. Max was very proud of his Public Service Award for his years of service to the elderly through the payee program. He also received his Neighborhood Leadership Award for senior's advocacy presented by Atty. General Lee Fisher of Ohio in 1994.

Funeral services were private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Honor Flight, Inc, Attn: Tom O'Neal 300 E. Auburn Ave., Springfield, OH 45505. Arrangements in care of the JACKSON LYTLE WILLIAMS Funeral Home.
