John C. McAtee


John C. McAtee, 88, of Springfield, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 29, 2008. He was born on April 26, 1920 in Indianapolis, IN to Katherine (Schuck) and Hershel McAtee.

He married Opal Cecilia Rasico on September 1, 1942 in Loogootee, IN. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in England in 1942, in France in 1943 and 1944 and was received an Honorable Discharge in December 1945. John earned his Associate Degree from Vincennes University in Indiana in 1948; his Bachelors Degree from the University of Illinois in 1950; and his Masters Degree in Mathematics from the University of Illinois in 1951. He was employed from 1951 to 1978 in the Aeronautical Systems Division At Wright Patterson Air Force Base, providing propulsion support to conceptual aircraft design teams as well as mathematical evaluations and analyses of new engine cycles and fuel types. He earned a Certificate of Merit from the Air Force Systems Command for Outstanding Accomplishments in 1974. John was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lawrence and H. Joseph; and one grandson, Patrick T. McAtee, Jr. in April 1999.

Left to cherish his memory are Cecilia, his loving wife of 66 years; nine children and spouses; Joyce (Phillip) Simendinger, Laura (Patrick) Foley, Sr., John "Jack" (Sue) McAtee, Patrick (Susan) McAtee, Sr., William "Bill" (Laura) McAtee, Marian "Mimi" (Eddie) Shell, Karen (Tony) Parker, Christopher Theresa) McAtee and David McAtee; 26 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary O'Connor; and a brother, Bob (Sally) McAtee.

Friends may call in the Conroy Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday in St. Teresa Church. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
