Leroy L. Killigrew

Leroy L. Killigrew, 98, of Springfield, passed away Friday evening November 21, 2008. He was born March 10, 1910.

He is preceded in death by his wife and soul mate, Verna (Huffman) Killigrew, who shared over 74 yeas together until she went to be with the Lord in 2006. Also proceeding Leroy in death, was his son, Thomas W. Killigrew; daughter, Mary (Killigrew) Parks; son-in-law, Eddie L Parks Sr.; siblings, Warren (B.J.) Covert, Earl (Angie) Covert, Beatrice Lawson.

Leroy leaves behind to mourn his loss are, grandchildren, Deborah L. Ray of Xenia, Terresa L. (Dan) Hyer of Bowersville, Eddie L. Parks of Columbus, and Melissa L. (Jeff) Logan of Xenia; great-great grandchildren, Ronald and Danielle Hyer of Xenia, Ashlee L. Logan of Newport News, VA, LeAnn L. Logan of Cincinnati and Bethany L. Logan of Xenia.

Leroy and Verna were married December 26, 1931 and settled in Springfield, OH. They lived through several obstacles such as the Great Depression and World War II, which Leroy was drafted in the Army in December 1943 and served until his honorable discharge in December 1945. Leroy received training as a mechanic with Signal Corps at Camp Crowder, MO, and Camp Reynolds, PA. He then was stationed in Newfoundland until WWII ended in 1945.

Before entering the service, he was employed by the National Supply Company in Springfield. Upon returning from the war, Leroy was a successful business owner and purchased a Sunoco Sun in Springfield, OH. A very talented mechanic he was, and people would come to his station by word-of-mouth. When a car needed repair, the community knew who could fix it..."take it to Leroy" they would say.

In the later years, Leroy along with Verna at his side purchased a Dairy Queen on Bectle Ave. Once again, a very successful business for them as they worked side-by-side with Verna in the front serving the cones and Leroy in the back making food. They were known for the homemade "Coney Sauce". Truck drivers coming through Springfield said they always made sure to stop for one of their "Coney Dogs".

Leroy was a very proud and hardworking man who loved to share his fondest memories with his wife meeting her on the "Huffman Farm". Also, he loved to share the stories during his WWII days. He was very proud to have had the opportunity where he saved a man's life during his war years. He was passing by when a disabled man was upstairs of a burning house. No one thought they could get him; however, without a thought, Leroy just climbed up to the upstairs window and carried him down over his shoulder. For his actions, he received a merit award.

A fascinating life he lived from his beginning as an orphan, finding his siblings after 25 years and reunited on a television show out of New York called "Key to the Missing" by Archdale J. Jones, television detective. Leroy enjoyed sharing his memories and life with friends and family.

Visitation will be held from 12PM until time of service at 1PM Wednesday November 26, 2008 in the JACKSON LYTLE WILLIAMS Funeral Home, Springfield, with Pastor Sandy Santos officiating. Interment to follow in Rose Hill Burial Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Mercy Hospice 1343 N. Fountain Blvd., Springfield, OH 45505.
