Nettie May Johnson

On Thursday, September 4, 2008 at 5:50 a.m., our mother, Nettie, ended her long journey on this earth and returned into God's hands where she will have eternal life and peace.

She was born Nettie May in August 5, 1918 in Clark County, Ohio the daughter of John and Anna (Carryer) Henkle.

She was raised and lived in Springfield, Ohio for most of her life. Nettie married Wilbur Massie in 1942 and they began their family. For a short period of time in the 1960's she worked at Bosca Leather. She resided on Ballentine Pike for over 50 years. In 1996, she moved to Cincinnati to be near her daughters, Evelyn and Connie. The past several years she has been in failing health, eventually becoming unable to live alone. She has been at Birchwood Care Center since May 2007.

Left, to celebrate her life and memory are her children, Ronald E. Massie of Sumter, South Carolina, Evelyn (Leon) Souder of Cincinnati, Virginia (Millard) VanHoose of Cable, Ohio, and Connie (Mike) Sowers of Cincinnati; her grandchildren, Kimberly Massie, Dana Fazekas, Wilbur W. Massie, Scott Holsapple, Susan Yockey, Lewis VanHoose, and David Sowers; ten great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; several step-great grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and friends.

Nettie was a homemaker most of her life, raising four children with her husband, Wilbur E. Massie, who preceded her in death on May 19, 1971. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Earl (Pete) Johnson in 1992, her parents, and two sisters, Anna Warren and Ruth Grisso.

She was our mother, grandmother, our teacher, and our friend. When the ones you love become memories, the memories become your treasures.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors and caregivers at Birchwood Care Center and to hospice for the compassion shown to our mother in her final days.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 11-1:00 p.m. Monday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, followed by her services at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Rick Clos officiating.

Interment will follow with mother being laid to rest next to our father, Wilbur, in Vale Cemetery.
