Bertha Adeline (Green) Jenkins


Bertha Adeline (Green) Jenkins, 79, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Oct. 5, 2007 after a courageous 10-month battle with cancer.

She was born on June 18, 1928 in Clark County, the daughter of Bertha Ann (Monroe) and William H. Green. Bertha graduated from Springfield High in 1946. She married the love of her life, Rodger C. Jenkins on March 7, 1948 and they spent 59 and one half years together until his death in August 2007.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rodger, her brothers IJ, Ben and Floyd Green, Everett, Forrest & Carl Chamberlain, her sisters, Irene Sharp, Ellen Freeze, Leona Ryan, Ida Curl and recently her son-in-law, James Maurer died unexpectedly on October 6, 2007. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Maurer, her sons, Rodger (Trish) Jenkins Jr. and Sam (Sue) Jenkins, her eight grandchildren and spouses, Ben (Emily) Maurer, Jamie (David) Ryan, Jason (Gail) Jenkins, Zach Jenkins, Casey Jenkins, Christy Jenkins, Sam Jenkins Jr., and Marty Jenkins, her four great-grandchildren, Benjamin Maurer, Alex, Hannah and Andrew "Charlie" Ryan and an extended family she called her own: Larry, Linda, Kevin (Ala) and Scott Slone and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She worked at Woolworth in downtown Springfield, Southern Village and eventually at the Upper Valley Mall. Bertha was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She showed this love many times by the simple things. She decorated birthday & wedding cakes, babysat, attended school plays, concerts, sporting events, 4H shows and all church events and was particularly talented at making handmade gifts and cooking special birthday dinners for her family. Bertha also loved to travel with her friends at Elderly United, go to shows at the Clifton Opera house and being involved in the many activities as a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, the Clifton Senior Citizens, Clifton Historical Society and T.O.P.S. Bertha will always be remembered for her great faith in God, her immense love of family and friends, and her childlike outlook on life amid its joys and sorrows.

The family would like to extend a gracious and heartfelt thank you to the many people who have shown their kindness to their mother, Bertha, during this difficult time. Your cards, phone calls, meals and prayers gave her the strength to face each day. A special thank you to all her health care providers, in particular to the loving, caring nurses on the 4th floor oncology unit at Springfield Community Hospital, especially Valerie, Beth, and Erin. Thanks to Dr. Filix Kencana, and his staff at the Springfield Regional Cancer Center and to the nurses and doctors at Hospice of Dayton. Your kindness did not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated.

Visitation will be held at 4-7 pm Friday in Conroy Funeral Home. A funeral service honoring her life will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church with Rev. Larry Bannick and Arby Conn officiating. A private graveside service will be held with the family.The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, Hospice of Dayton or to a favorite charity.
