Glenna L. Hornbeck


Glenna L. Hornbeck, 89, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother of Springfield, died Thursday evening, December 13, 2007 in Community Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Springfield on March 14, 1918 the daughter of Clarence P. "Pete" and Nettie (Byerman) Haerr.

She was a 1936 graduate of Springfield High School and a graduate of Community Hospital School of Nursing. Glenna was a plant nurse at Agaloy Tubing Company during World War II, was co-owner of the Highway Restaurant in South Vienna and spent the last 21 years of her professional career as a nurse at Mercy Medical Center where she retired as the Head Nurse in the recovery room.

She was a member of Elderly United, the Tecumseh Trailblazers, a world traveler, an inveterate solitaire player, a cross-word puzzle fanatic, and a bowler at the Shamrock Lanes in Springfield where she thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie of her fellow bowlers and delighted in attempting to break a score of 100. In recent years she was a resident of Governor's Manor where she was a wonderful friend to and of numerous residents and staff.

She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, George H. "Bud" Hornbeck and a daughter-in-law, Gayle L. Hornbeck in 2006. Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Mildred (Carl) Fry, Dorothy (Arnold) Moseman, Emma (John) Whited, Della (Faber) Poland and her brother, Clarence "Bud" (Virginia) Haerr.

Survivors include her four children, David B. (Joan L.) Hornbeck of Columbus, Jacquelyn K. Hornbeck of Wooster, Carol J. (Richard E.) Moody of Casa Grande, Arizona, and Geoffrey H. Hornbeck of Grove City; four grandchildren, Kirsten L. (James T.) Stilgenbauer of Cary, North Carolina, and Jason R. Moody, David Scott Moody and Shannon E. Moody, all of Casa Grande, Arizona; and two great grandsons, Nathan James and Andrew Thomas Stilgenbauer of Cary, North Carolina and Cincinnati; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday in the United Church of South Vienna with Pastor Scott Griswold officiating.
