Floyd E. Holmes


Floyd E. Holmes, 83, of Springfield died Friday, February 13, 2009 in the Ohio State University Medical Center. He was born in Fleming, Kentucky on March 23, 1925, the son of Thomas G. and Grace (Olinger) Holmes.

He worked at International Harvester from 1946 until 1954, when he went to work for the Gentile AF Base, retiring in 1982 with 30 years of service from DESC as an equipment specialist. He served his country in the 1st Infantry Div. fighting from Omaha Beach to the Cologyne Plains in Germany and was wounded during World War II in the US Army. Floyd was a member of the DAV chapter # 13, Moose Lodge, and the American Legion Post # 888. He was an avid pool player in 8-ball and straight pool playing at both the state and national levels, loved working crossword puzzles, and enjoyed walking at the Upper Valley Mall. Floyd was a very devoted family man and loved getting together with his children, grandchildren, great grandchild, and siblings and have a good time.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Louise, and five brothers.

He is survived by two daughters Shirley (Brad) Weber of Cincinnati and Debbie (Mark) Plank of Springfield, one son Robert W. Holmes of Springfield, one brother Gerald (Phyllis) Holmes of East Pointe, Michigan, six grandchildren Rob (Marie) Taylor, Josh (Nicole) Holmes, Justin (Kellie) Holmes, Jason Plank, Heather (Justin Cox) Plank, Zachary J, Weber, three great-grandchildren Cole, Kyle, and Allie, numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Floyd's life will be Wednesday at 2:00 PM in the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME. Family and friends may call one hour prior to services. Entombment to follow in the Rose Hill Mausoleum. Memorial contributions are requested to Honor Flight 300 East Auburn Ave. Springfield, Ohio 45505. .
