Luther E. Gilliam, Jr.


Luther E. Gilliam, Jr., 74, of Springfield passed away Thursday, February 28, 2008 in the Heartland of Springfield.

He was born March 24, 1933 in Dunham, Kentucky, the son of Luther E. Sr. and Gladys (Tunnel) Gilliam.

Luther retired from the United States Army in 1972 and Southern Ohio Coal Company in 1993 after 20 plus years of service. He and his wife attended the Springfield Church of Christ. Luther was a very loving and devoted husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa and will be sadly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 53 years, Veneva (Wyant) Gilliam; two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah K. and Terry Cadle of Springfield and Terrace A. and Richard Freeland of Pomeroy, Ohio; two sons and daughter-in-law, John P. and Darlene Gilliam of Gahanna, Ohio and Edmund W. Gilliam of Athens, Ohio; one sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Ronnie Wright of Dorton, Kentucky; two brothers and sister-in-law, Harold and Judith Gilliam of Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania and Curtis Gilliam of Gallipolis, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, James, Herschel and Jacob Gilliam.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2008 from 1-2 p.m. in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME.

Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Mike Surgenor officiating.

Inurnment will be held at the convenience of the family.
