Mary Vannah Davidson


Mary Vannah Davidson died December 5, 2007 at her daughter's home in Upper Arlington, OH. She was 86.

Born in Gorham NH to Harold and Bessie (Locke) Vannah, Mary was a graduate of Berlin (NH) High School, attended the University of New Hampshire, and graduated from Duke University School of Nursing. She was a member of the Navy Student Nurse Corps during World War II. In 1946 she was married to John A. Davidson, M.D. and lived in Springfield, OH from 1947 to April 2007.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers William and Harold Vannah, and sister Betsey Carr.

She is survived by six children: John A. Davidson II, Los Angeles CA; Robert, Fairfield IA; Helen Davidson McCarthy, Upper Arlington; Patricia, Upper Arlington; Mary Beth, Portland ME; and Thomas, Springfield OH; and five grandchildren: Erin, Andrew, and Michael McCarthy, David Peterson, and Sam Bennett. Also survived by sisters-in-law Dorothy Vannah of Wrentham MA, Theresa Vannah of Vero Beach FL, and Anne Davidson of New Bern NC, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary, a Registered Nurse, served as a volunteer nurse with the American Red Cross in Springfield and with the Missionary Health Service of Springfield, with which she worked in Honduras. Mary was a member of the Girl Scouts of America for 25 years, serving as a scout leader and in council leadership positions. She also served on the Advisory Board of the Parent Infant Center in Springfield, and as a member of St. Teresa Church, the Clark County Medical Alliance, and the Kiser Lake Sailing Club.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Catholic Central High School Memorial Scholarship Fund, founded in 1975 in memory of Dr. Davidson, the Missionary Health Service of Springfield, Ohio, or St. Teresa Church.

A funeral Mass will be held Monday, December 10 at noon at St. Teresa Church. The family invites friends to join them for lunch following the service. Burial will be at Ferncliff Cemetery following the reception.
