Lily L. (Smith) Downing


Lily L. (Smith) Downing, 91 of Springfield died January 30, 2008 in the Springfield Regional Medical Center Fountain Campus.

She was born July 24, 1916 in Springfield, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph L. and Mary Alta Smith.

She graduated from Oak Grove High School of Springfield in 1934 and attended Springfield Business College. She was employed by the Ohio Bell Telephone Company for four years prior to entering the Federal Government Civil Service in January 1942. During her tenure with the Federal government she worked at several Air Force Bases and government offices throughout the country, retiring from the Defense Construction Supply Center in Columbus, Ohio in January 1972. Upon retirement from Civil Service, Lily moved to Bradenton, Florida where she found satisfaction and pleasure in doing volunteer work and teaching arts and crafts for the next 20 years at several organizations before returning to her hometown of Springfield, Ohio.

She is survived by her sister, Opal L. Hill of Logan, Ohio; sister in law Edith M. (Coen) Smith of Athens, Ohio; and her niece Cheryl Jo (Edward) Jackson of Logan, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Donald V. and Russell R. Smith; brother in law Ben Hill; and nephew Ronald Edsen Smith.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 4, 2008 at 1:00 PM in the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME with Mr. John Wilson officiating. Family and friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial to follow in the family lot in Grape Grove Cemetery near Jamestown, Ohio.
