Norman C. Carey
Norman C. Carey, 90, of Springfield, died on Sunday evening, October 19, 2008 at Oakwood Village Glaesner Care Center.
A long-time lawyer, World War II veteran and active civic leader, he was born in Middletown, Ohio, on June 8, 1918, son of Leslie E. and Mabel Strait Carey. He was graduated from Springfield High School in 1936, Wittenberg College in 1940 and Michigan University Law School in 1948. An Eagle Scout, Mr. Carey was a varsity debater and active in high school and college bands and orchestras and the Wittenberg Choir. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and a life member of High Street United Methodist Church.
He taught in the Springfield school system until he entered the U.S. Army in 1941. He trained with the 89th Division, was commissioned at Fort Benning and sent to Normandy with the 35th Division as a rifle company commander. He was awarded two Silver Stars and the French Croix de Guerre. He returned from Europe in December of 1944 with the rank of major. After graduation from law school, he spent 53 years practicing law in Springfield.
He was a past president of the Clark County Bar Association, past president of the Springfield Kiwanis Club, past president of the H.S. Kissell Masonic Lodge No. 674 and was District Deputy of the 9th Masonic District. He was a member of the York Rite and Scottish Rite. He was made a 33rd Degree Mason.
Mr. Carey was past president of the 35th Division Assn. He was also co-founder of the 44th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Civil War Reenactment Band and served as its director for many years. He was co-chairman of the Civil War 100th Anniversary in Clark County and a member of the North-South Skirmish Association, co-founding the NSSA in Clark County. He also served as co-chairman of the American Revolution Bicentennial celebration in Ohio and other historical reenactments. He was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in 2004.
Mr. Carey is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mildred (Purfield), and nine living children, Ann (Dale) McFeatters of Bethesda, Md., Frances Kaufman of Columbus, Elizabeth (David) Sherf of Phoenix, Az., Gen. David (Trish) Carey of Arlington, Va., Marian (John) Nielson of Wheat Ridge, Co., Judge Richard P. (Lisa) Carey of Springfield, Jennifer (Michael) Bello of Needham, Mass., Daniel (Suzie) Carey of Springfield and Kathleen Carey Sweet of Springfield; 23 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris Allene Carey of Springfield.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME. Masonic services will be held at 8:00 p.m.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at High Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Price officiating.
Interment and military services will be at Ferncliff Cemetery.
