Joseph M. Clayton
Joseph M. Clayton, 47, of Springfield died at 10:49 p.m. Monday, March 16, 2009 at Springfield Regional Medical Center High St. Campus. He was born in Springfield on December 12, 1961, the beloved son of James M. Clayton and Marjorie (Canelles) Spangler.
He was a graduate of Catholic Central High School and attended St. Joseph's College, Renssellaer, Indiana. He had been employed as an adjuster for the Assurant Insurance Co. for the past several years. He also was employed by the Springfield News & Sun for over twenty years providing the box scores and wrote many articles for the sports department. Joe also served as editor for the Parish News for over twenty-five years, and was a member of St. Joseph Church where he served as a lector. His love and knowledge of sports was vast, leading him to dedicated service as lead scorekeeper for the Wittenberg University Sports program for various sports for almost thirty years. From the press box, Joe never missed a Tiger Football home game, and recorded 600 Witt Men & Women's Basketball games. Most recently, Joe also served as Witt's sports information representative on the road for Witt Football, and was a Wittenberg Athletics Hall of Honor committee member. During Witt's offseason, Joe was a devoted fan of the Columbus Clippers.
Survivors include his aunts, Mary Ann Beach, Springfield, Rita Burk, Centerville, OH, Florene Poulos, Springfield, and great aunt Pauline (Robert) Dunn of Springfield; his mother's husband, Marvin Spangler; cousins and their families: Lucianne (Jack) Lilienthal, Dan (Dena) Beach, Karen (Bob) Corcoran, Gene (Juli) Burk, Sue (Paul) Hamilton, Teresa (Nick) Weiser, Joan (Paul) Cardoni, Jim Burk, Christine Burk, Julie Burk, Becky (Jim) Piccolo, and Flora (Jack Hughes).
His parents, grandparents, and several aunts and uncles preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday in the Conroy Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Church.
