Joseph Clauss
Joseph Clauss, 94, of Springfield went home to Jesus on January 18, 2008 in the Oakwood Village.
He was born on December 6, 1913 in Dayton, Ohio the son of William and Emma Sauer Clauss.
Joe was raised in the Pythian Home due to the illness and untimely death of his father. He was the captain of the 1933 undefeated championship Springfield High football team and was inducted into the South High Football Hall of Fame. He played football for the Wisconsin Badgers in his college days. He proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he fought in the Northern African Theater. He retired from Cooper Industries in 1975. Joe loved to be with his family and making others laugh with his many stories. His main hobby was gardening and sharing his produce with others. He attended Fifth Lutheran Church for many years but after marrying Martha he became a member of Hillside Church of God.
He is survived by his wife Martha (Treat) Clauss whom he married in 1995, his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Vic Gran, granddaughters and their spouses: Susan and Scott Van Voorhis, Amy Gran and his great grandchildren, Hannah and Drew Agee and Cheyanne Van Voorhis, step-son, Martin Treat all of Springfield and step granddaughters, Lori Tingley, Kelly and Tara Treat. Also surviving is a brother Louis Clauss of Illinois, special niece, Linda (Steve) May of Maryland, and special nephew, Dick (Marge) Cozad of Springfield, and several other nieces.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife of fifty-two years, Gertrude in 1994, sisters, Christine Cozad, Clara Clauss, Marie Minier, and Helen Clauss and brothers, William and John.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, January 21, 2008 from 5-8 pm in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME where service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 am with Reverend Michael Criner and John Wilson officiating. Susan Van Voorhis will give the eulogy. Entombment will be in the Rose Hill Mausoleum.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the many caring and kind staff members at Oakwood Village for all their compassion and love for Joe while he was there and to Dr. To for his special care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may me made to the First Christian Church building fund or Hillside Church of God building fund.
