Clarence E. Carter
Clarence E. "Sonny" Carter, 60, ended his life's journey March 12, 2009. He was born September 6, 1948 to Clarence E. and Beatrice Carter.
Sonny graduated in 1967 from Springfield South High School where he was one of the driving forces of the 1964 GOL undefeated championship football team. While rearing a family, young Sonny worked two jobs and studied Industrial Management through Lincoln Technical Institute where he received an Associates Degree. He worked his way up to become the first African American department head at Navistar International.
Sonny leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 40 years, Debra I. Browning-Carter; three children, Stephen R. Carter of Springfield, Stephanie R. (Ben) Carter-White of Suffolk, Virginia and Eric Queen of Centerville, Ohio;, three grandchildren, Benita, Darius and Toni Carter-White of Virginia; mother-in-law, Thelma Browning of Springfield; two sisters-in-law, Vivian (James) Gibson and Thea Dodge; an aunt, Evelyn Davis and two uncles, Eugene Carter and John Smith; three very close friends, Earl Birden, Joe Speaks and Gary Truss and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother at the early age of 6 and later in life by his father and father-in-law, John C. Browning.

Visitation will be Thursday from 1:30-2 p.m. in the Robert C. Henry Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow in the funeral home at 2 p.m. with Pator Ernest C. Brown Sr. Officiating. The family will receive friends at 1208 E. Possum Road after the services.
