Samuel H. Blankenship


Samuel H. Blankenship, 75, of Springfield, went to be with the Lord, on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 in the Springfield Regional Medical Center.

He was born on August 9, 1933 in Mannington, West Virginia the son of Bill and Mabel Scritchfield.

Sam graduated with honors from Mannington High School and had perfect attendance from grades k-12. He went on to serve our country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. After returning from his military service, he went to work for International Harvester Truck Company retiring from Navistar in 2002 after thirty-three years of service.

Sam lost the love of his life, Shirley, on July 27, 2008 who always said he was a hard worker, good provider, and dedicated husband and father. They were married on September 20, 1958 and her death was two months before their 50th wedding anniversary.

He was a member of the East High Street Church of Christ and was fondly known as the "Candy Man".

He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law: Judy Blankenship, Jan and Greg DeLong, and Vicki and Chris White; his grandchildren whom he adored and took great pride in: Amber and Amanda DeLong, and Drake and Peyton Samuel White, one brother, Bill Scritchfield, and one sister, Mary Louise Raimondi, and his dog, "Babe".

Sam was proud of his granddaughter's arts and crafts accomplishments and watching wrestling most every Friday night with his grandsons. His face "lit up" when he was called Grandpa.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, son, Jeffrey Lee Blankenship, brother, Donald Blankenship, and two sisters, Irene Postleweit and Jessie Lou Meyer.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, March 13, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME where services will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with Minister Phil Grear officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery.
