Richard Lee Bunnell


Richard Lee Bunnell, 84, of Springfield, died Sunday morning, January 27, 2008 in the Mercy Medical Center following an extended illness.

He was born April 26, 1923 in Urbana, Ohio to Edwin Lee and Florence (Hawkins) Bunnell.

He was a graduate of Urbana High School. Dick proudly served in Battery B, 387th AAA, AW Battalion that went ashore during the Normandy Invasion. He was wounded twice during action in Europe and received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, several other campaign medals and was recently presented the French Croix de Guerre. He retired as a journeyman ironworker from Local Union 290 and was a certified bridge welder. He loved drives through the Dayton and Springfield areas pointing out and checking on building and bridges he helped construct. Dick loved animals and the outdoors and traveled across much of the country with his beloved family. He enjoyed many summers at the "Pink Palace", his summer retreat on Grand Lake St. Mary's. He was a member of Lagonda United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his bride of 65 years, Betty Jane (Winner) Bunnell; son, David (Ruth Ann) Bunnell of Charlo, Montana; two daughters, Suzie (Joseph) Leffel of Granville, Ohio and Pam (Jack) Amundson of Delaware, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Michelle Leffel-Rakich, Derek (Shea) Bunnell, Bethanne Leffel-Ployhar, Douglas Bunnell, Andrea and John Reeves, Zachary Amundson, and Rachael Amundson; and ten great grandchildren, Alexander, Lindsey and Brynna Rakich, Madison LePiane, Bridger Reeves, Grace and Bryce Bunnell, Julian, Tristan and Farryn Ployhar. Also surviving are nine nieces including Debbie Dunham of Springfield and Beverly Morley of Urbana; several great nieces and nephews including Kristie Seevers of Brookville, Ohio; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Peggy and Harvey Watkins; and many special friends who all helped him to enjoy a rich life, including Don and Edith Hayes, Della Dunham, Joann Porter, Wanda and Jack Wentz, Jane and Rudy Copenhaver, and honorary son, Joe Zink.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Lagonda United Methodist Church with Pastor Dan Held officiating.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be sent in his name to Lagonda United Methodist Church, 2030 Mitchell Blvd., Springfield, Ohio 45503.
