John Brain, Jr.


John Brain, Jr. of Springfield died Sunday, July 6, 2008 in the emergency room of the Springfield Regional Medical Center Fountain Campus.

He was born in Keansburg, NJ on January 17, 1919, the son of John and Stella (McCreary) Brain.

John retired as a salesman with Conrail with 35 years of service. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church; Stonington Lodge #503, Amherst, Ohio, Antioch Shrine, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, and the Khana Shahar Grotto. Involvement with his church wherever he lived was always very important to John. His involvement included being a church elder, Stephen's Ministry, lay preacher, Sunday School teacher and singing in the church choir. John also was a member of the National American Red Cross Disaster Team, along with his wife Shirley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters Elva Kip and his twin Estelle Gibson; and granddaughter Kathleen Brain.

He has left to cherish his memories his wife of 66 years Shirley A. (Bromley) Brain, whom he married October 4, 1941; two sons and daughters-in-law Charles & Mindy Brain of Wooster and David & Patricia Brain of Millersville, Maryland; four daughters and sons-in-law Barbara & James Belmont of Huntley, IL, Eileen & Dr. Charles DePeri of Jackson, NJ, Virginia & Joseph Jaznowitz of Toms River, NJ, and Elizabeth & John Sadowski of Elyria; three brothers and sisters-in-law William & Maybelle Brain of Pleasant Hill, CA, Robert & Doris Brain of Milford, NJ, and Leroy & Marilyn Brain of Hendersonville, NC; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews , and a host of friends.

Memorial services will be Thursday at 10:30 AM in the Ohio Masonic Home Chapel with Rev. Charlotte Reed officiating. Burial in the Ohio Masonic Home Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are requested to the Shriner's Children Hospitals c/o Springfield-Clark Co Shrine Club PO Box 901 Springfield, Ohio 45501. Richards, Raff & Dunbar Memorial Home has been entrusted with the final arrangements.
