Richard J. Arthur


Richard J. Arthur, 83, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died Tuesday December 18, 2007 in his residence after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born December 12, 1924 in Springfield the son of the late John E. and Gladys (Sparrow) Arthur.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, Marie; he is survived by her brother Roger Carmody of Delaware, Ohio; her two nieces, Mrs. Laura Lewis of Powell, Ohio and Mrs. Corinne Moore of Plain City, Ohio and their families.

After graduating from Springfield High School in 1943, Mr. Arthur was inducted immediately into the Unites States Army Air Corps pre-meteorological and radar programs. Participation in these programs led to his commission of Second Lieutenant and attendance at Haverford College, Yale University, Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was discharged in February 1946 and attended Purdue University, receiving a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1948. Master Degrees in Electrical Engineering and also Applied Mathematics were achieved in 1951 from the University of Illinois. Mr. Arthur was employed by Bell Aircraft, Niagara Falls, New York from May 1951-1961. He moved to Charlottesville to Sperry Marine in 1961, leaving as Director of Engineering in 1973. He was employed by and retired from the Naval Surface Weapons Center, Dahlgren, Virginia, as Deputy Head of the Weapons Department in January 1987.

Dick enjoyed a good game of bridge, chess, classical music and fine dining. His dogs brought great joy to his life starting in 1957 with poodle no. 1, "Gussie" to the present poodle no 7., "Always Active Alex".

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2007 in the Conroy Funeral Home with the family receiving friends one-hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.
