Mary Elizabeth Starrick Barnes


Mary Elizabeth Starrick Barnes, 87, of Springfield died Saturday, February 23, 2008 in Mercy Medical Center following six months of declining health.

She was born March 17, 1920 in Springfield the daughter of William H. and Ada F. (Mechlin) Starrick.

Mrs. Barnes attended Community Hospital School of Nursing and in the early 1940's began a career as an LPN that spanned well over forty years. She started work at Champaign County Hospital, moved to Mercy Medical Center in 1953, then worked twenty-five years for Dr. John Burnett, who was the first Board Certified OB/GYN in Springfield and retired from Oesterlen-Services for Youth.

Mary was a longtime member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she served two terms on Church Council, taught Sunday School and led the Youth Group.

She is survived by one daughter Linda B. Moeller; two sons and daughters-in-law Terry and Susie Barnes, Christopher and Janice Barnes, all of Springfield; three grandchildren Stephen Barnes of Maumee, Ohio, A.J. Barnes and Matthew (Elizabeth) Moeller both of Columbus, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer C. Barnes in 1981 and two brothers William F. and Richard M. Starrick.

Memorial services will be held Thursday at 7:00 PM. in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Roger Herrig officiating. The family will gather at the church at 5:30 PM. with a light meal at 6:00 PM. Thursday. The family is being served by RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME.
